Fun Ideas For Reading
Celebrate Finishing the Book
Daddy/Daughter Date
Get the Family Involved
Girl's Night
Incentives
Marathon Reading
Set the Mood
Share Your Books With Friends
Take Books on Road Trips
Celebrate Finishing the Book
If a
book read is about animals, plan a trip to the zoo or a farm to see
those kinds of animals. If the book has been made into a movie, think
about renting the movie after the book is finished.
Get the Family Involved
Give
family members characters to read for. Have a parent be the narrator
and keep everyone in their places. This works best when everyone is
able to read and stay on task together.
"Girl's Night"
or "Daddy/Daughter Date" to Read
Pick a
block of time, to spend together reading. Get comfy with pajamas and
pillows, popcorn and drinks and read just with mom, or just with dad,
etc. Reading time is bonding time!
Incentives
Incentives to go somewhere or do something related to a reading goal can
be a lot of fun. Perhaps when your daughter reads 31 books, she can go
to an ice cream parlor and choose from 31 flavors. Draw an ice cream
cone with 31 pieces. Have your daughter color a piece each time a book
is read. When her picture is completely colored, she is ready for her
treat. There are many other fun ways to set up incentives. Be creative
and think of your child.
Marathon Reading
Plan a
day for the whole family to spend a couple of hours reading. Pick
book(s) ahead of time and anticipate the "reading marathon." You might
want to go to the library and get a short stack of books to choose from
and switch to throughout the marathon. Don't forget to provide snacks!
Set
the Mood
Think
about your surroundings. If you are reading a summertime book, find a
comfortable place to read outside in the sunshine. If your book is set
a long time ago, read by candlelight or hurricane lamps. If it is a cold
winter's night, light the fire and sip hot cocoa. Take a close look at
the book. Which settings can you recreate at home or in your own
backyard? Put up a tent in the family room and read by flashlight for a
perfect tale of adventure.
Share Books With Friends
Sharing books gives someone else the opportunity to read the same book
that your daughter has read. Perhaps a book group can be started.
Talking with friends about books, brings a whole new dimension to the
book and to the friendship!
Take
Books on Road Trips
Read
books aloud to each other on road trips. This is a great way to pass
the time. Just be sure to stop reading when someone falls asleep, or be
ready to fill them in on everything they missed while dozing off.
Nobody likes to be left out!
