When a student struggles with reading, whether it is a fluency or comprehension problem, she can find herself discouraged.  With the Club's fun approach, students have a new motivation and desire to read.  When reading is a challenge, Etta's Book Club focuses on the love of storytelling, encouraging families to read aloud together and discuss what is read.

Things to Try:

Make Reading Comfortable

If a child associates reading with struggling and discomfort, the desire to read is impaired.  Try to find a time and place where there is no pressure associated with reading.  Create an environment where reading is for pleasure and recreation.  Pick a favorite room, some fluffy pillows, and get cozy before reading.  This will create a positive association with reading.

Creative Ways to Read Together

There are many different ways to read together.  You can take turns reading paragraphs or pages.  You can divide up dialog by having your daughter choose a character to read, while a parent or sibling reads the narration or another character.  You may wish to use your finger as a guide so each person can stay on task.  Develop a cue for your daughter to know when it is her turn to read.

Read To Your Daughter Aloud

Reading aloud to your daughter, shared reading, and independent reading are all beneficial.  Reading aloud to your daughter gives her a model of fluency to follow and takes performance pressure off, if she is struggling.  This gives your daughter an opportunity to experience the fun of storytelling regardless of her ability to independently read the books placed in front of her.

Make Reading Fun!

When reading is associated with positive experiences and fun, students will come back for more reading.  We believe this is key for students with reading challenges.  With a little creativity, you can make reading more fun for the whole family.  Find some creative ideas on our page, "Make Reading Fun!"
