The Consumer Product & Safety Commission granted a one year stay, but later a court ruled the stay was illegal. The law states that only the congress is capable to grant the stay. Products are being taken off of shelves and certain industries have put whole lines of product on hold. The results are devastating to so many businesses across the country.

The Consumer Product & Safety Improvement Act was put into place on Feb. 10, 2009. This act requires products intended for children under the age of 12 undergo extensive costly testing.

In light of this update, we will continue to offer Etta’s Book Club kits through Etta’s Book Boutique found at www.ettasbookclub.com. However, we have made the decision to move forward with Etta’s NEW format. The new format will offer more titles and include a wider range of reading levels and age groups. We will launch Etta’s Book Club Junior and Etta’s Book Club Classics this year. Automatic shipments will be discontinued, giving customers and book groups the flexibility to order books at their convenience. The new format will be more eco-friendly and budget-friendly for these current times.

Every unique item sold in the U.S. is required to be tested at a cost prohibitive to many small businesses, including Etta’s Book Club. This law impacts all handmade goods, arts and crafts intended for children. We have been awaiting clarification of this legislation and how it impacts our goods, craft supplies, and the publishing industry in general. Regrettably, we have been forced to cease production of kits at this time.

As of February 7, 2009 we will not be able to ship book club kits. Our previous packages will be available online until then. Please note that we have no cause for concern as to the safety of our products. The charms are lead free and have always been U.S. made with high quality pewter and silver plating. To test every book, craft, ribbon, packaging material, etc. is impossible.

Etta’s Book Club will continue to be a champion of reading and literacy. We will support book groups and share ideas. We will continue our mission to encourage the love of reading through our online presence at ettasbookclub.com. We hope to reach many more girls and inspire many more families as we look forward.

On a personal note, I am sorry to see this aspect of Etta’s Book Club end. Etta’s Book Club kits have been a spectacular experiment. Three years ago I had a dream of sharing the love of reading with my daughter who struggled to read. She is now thirteen and despite dyslexia, loves to read. Using the creative approach of Etta’s Book Club has made all the difference.

Girls in 10 states across the country have joined in the fun of book club kits, crafts, charms, and club meetings. We’ve appreciated the friendships we have made and hope our relationships will continue. May there always be good inspiring books to read and friends to share them with.

Where We Just Love Books!

Our December package is filled with lots of “joyful” goodies! Make a “joy” plaque, ornaments and paper chains with festive papers and ribbons and learn how to recycle your favorite holiday cards to create more!

Each December package includes a kit to create your own “joy” plaque. Materials vary so each package is your own unique, one-of-a-kind creation! We can’t wait to see what you come up with!

We are excited to announce our very first holiday book club selection. We also made sure to have extra packages available for holiday gifts and parties. Kit’s Surprise will warm your heart, inspire you, and get you in the holiday spirit of giving. Kit’s family struggles to keep their home in the middle of the Great Depression. Kit’s best friend Ruth wants to help, but unknowingly makes things worse. Find out how Kit rises to the challenges before her. The holiday package includes three simple and timeless projects to spread joy during the holidays. We will start to ship at the beginning of next week. Make this a holiday to remember the simple joys of life, time together, homemade treats and random acts of kindness.

We are very happy to be featuring one of your favorite authors, Andrew Clements, in this month’s package. Etta’s pick for September/October, The School Story, is about a twelve year old girl, her best friend, and their mission to write and publish their very own book. Our book club package also includes a fabulous kit to create your own personalized book, great for creative writing, journaling, and scrap booking!
